What ages does Monarch Preschool serve?

Monarch Preschool, College Park serves children aged 3-5. Children can begin on their 3rd birthday.

Is it open to anyone or is there a preference system? Is it open to me as a College Park resident or UMD employees?

Where is the school, and how far is Monarch Preschool College Park from the metro?

Monarch Preschool is located at 9606 50th Avenue, College Park, MD 20740 – right off of Rhode Island Avenue and Hollywood Road, in College Park,

just south of the Hollywood Shopping Center. It is a less than a mile from the Greenbelt Metro by foot or roughly a 17-minute walk.

WMATAs 83 bus stops right in front of the preschool. It connects folks from Cherry Hill to the Rhode Island Metro in DC, with stops along Baltimore Avenue (US-1). This is a 1-minute walk.

Additionally, there is a bikeshare location at both the Hollywood Shopping Center on Rhode Island Avenue and Greenbelt Metro Station that can connect folks to additional locations in College Park.

Are there any discounts or financial assistance?

There are discounts. At this time, financial assistance is not available – but you can claim federal and state tax credits depending on your family’s financial situation. We accept childcare scholarships as well. Please visit our tuition and fees page to learn more.

Is food included in tuition?

The children will receive two snacks per day, morning and afternoon. Snacks will consist of fruit, crackers, applesauce, fruit cup and/or yogurt. Snacks will be a healthy option. Children will be permitted to have a snack outside of designated time allotted if they are hungry. Children are welcomed to bring their own snacks.

Lunch will be provided for an additional daily cost. Lunch can be ordered or children can bring their own lunches to school.

 

Are there part-time options?

Yes, there is an option to enroll full-time, two days a week or three days a week. Please contact Krissie Taylor, Monarch Preschool’s Director, at 240-713-4721 or taylorkr@monarchpreschool.com to discuss part-time options.

What time do I need to drop my child off each day?

Monarch Preschool will begin their academic day 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. We ask all children arrive no later than 9:00 a.m. 

What is The Children’s Guild?

The Children’s Guild is a nonprofit organization founded in 1953 and dedicated to pioneering educational services for children and families. The Children’s Guild was founded by Dr. Leo Kanner, a world-renowned psychiatrist that discovered autism at John’s Hopkins in Baltimore. Click here to learn more.

What’s the relationship to UMD?

Monarch Preschool College Park is part of a top-university community. The Monarch Preschool College Park, along with the University’s Center for Young Children and a new UMD daycare at Calvert Road, will provide UMD employees, City residents and families in the surrounding communities with three excellent options for early childhood care in College Park.

In addition, Monarch Preschool will work with the University’s College of Education to use the new Children Study the World curriculum and developing pathways for early childhood education teacher training, internships, research, and partnership.

What is the classroom student to teacher ratio? And what are the teacher's certifications?

The classroom enrollment may not exceed 20 children; Staff to child ratio is 1 to 10. Two teachers will be present in the classroom throughout the day.

Lead classroom teachers will hold an Early Childhood Teaching degree. Co-teachers will hold an Associate’s Degree, 90 hour preschool certificate and/or Child Development Associate (CDA) in preschool. Classrooms will have teacher’s assistants as well.

What is Monarch Preschool's emergency closing or weather related policy?

Monarch Preschool will follow Prince George’s County Public Schools for all weather related delays and/or school closings https://www.pgcps.org/. Families are encouraged to join the PGCPS notification app, learn more: https://www.pgcps.org/weather/

Does my child need to be potty trained to enroll at Monarch Preschool?

All children are expected to be potty trained wearing underwear with minimal accidents. Wearing pull-ups is not considered being potty trained.
